Fighting a knife is always a last resort. - Stay out of stabbing range by using lateral movement and angles to keep distance. - Understand the "reactionary gap" – If you're too close, your reaction time is minimal. Create space whenever possible. 2) Defensive Positioning & Protecting Vital Areas - Protect your vital areas – Keep your chin down and guard your throat, ribs, stomach, and arteries.. - Use your lead arm to deflect attacks while keeping your rear hand ready to counter or block. 3) Recognizing Knife Attacks - Understand how knives are used in attacks – Common types include thrusts, slashes, and grabs. - Recognize knife grips – Attackers often use the icepick grip (overhand stab) or standard grip (forward stab). 4) Redirecting & Controlling the Weapon Hand (If You Can’t Escape) - Control the weapon hand – Grab, redirect, or deflect the knife-wielding arm to reduce the threat. - Use two-on-one control – Secure both of your hands on their knife arm to limit movement. - Use angles and leverage to weaken their grip and limit their ability to strike. - Only attempt a disarm as a last resort – It’s extremely dangerous, and escaping is always the better option. 5) Surviving & Fighting Through an Attack (If You’re Forced to Engage) - Expect to get cut – Focus on minimizing damage by controlling the situation. - Keep moving and angling to avoid multiple stabs and limit the attacker’s ability to follow up. - Target weak points – If you must fight, go for the eyes, throat, groin, or knees to stop the attacker. - Train under pressure – Realistic, full-speed drills with resistant attackers will prepare you for real scenarios.
